Where are we living in Flanders in 2035?

To what extent are the current trends in urban developments aligned with the expected demographic growth and evolutions in housing preferences?

Both the future housing demand and the potential future housing supply in Flanders were quantified by means of a spatial analysis, according to a number of scenarios.

The match between supply and demand indicates that the potential supply exceeds the future demand until 2035! However, there is not always a match of housing need with the type of housing that is (can be) offered: in Flanders there is an excess in the supply of detached single-family houses compared to the expected future demand for this type of housing.

The results offer a better insight in how a shift in housing (preferences) and developments can be steered and what those steering options at both the regional and the local level.
