With evolving climate change and rapid urban growth, it is expected that portions of Africa are heading towards a situation of ‘lethal heat’ (extreme heat), in which human physiology is pushed beyond its natural cooling capacity and with impacts to health, labour productivity and energy (cooling) requirements. Little or no measures are currently taken to remediate this; in fact, the challenge of building resilience against extreme heat is hardly or not considered in Africa.
VITO establishes an urban climate change information (u-CLIP) platform for Niamey, that contains spatial simulations of alternative future urban growth scenarios and related scenarios of future climate change and potential heat island impact on the city.
The platform is tailored to suit the needs of both local authorities and stakeholders from civil society
and aims to trigger climate action that leads to an enhanced climate resilience in the urban agglomeration of Niamey and – in the longer term – cities across Africa.
