The sediment explorer

The remediation of sullied sediments is required to continuously improve the water quality of rivers. In Flanders, sediment quality data are collected by different local and regional authorities for different purposes. The need to proactively identify locations, for which the remediation of contaminated sediments would benefit the overall water quality and reduce human health risks, is pertinent.

VITO, together with Flemish Waste Agency (OVAM), Flemish environment agency (VMM) and the various water management authorities, developed the “Sediment Explorer” that centralizes and integrates data to assess a research prioritization for all sediments in Flanders.

This tool (available online soon via DOV and offline for the managers) supports the decision making process on further examination, remediation and/or management of sediments.
