Thanks to a strong data inventory various organizations recently gained ownership over large datasets. Data can be used to carry out analyses or to deliver policy decision support. Large datasets, however, might also induce a need for an objective prioritisation model to indicate which elements in the dataset must be treated as a priority.
VITO developed a spatial prioritisation model that assigns locations a score based on both location-specific information and the broader spatial context of a location. One of the recent applications concerns the inventory of (former) landfills in Flanders that are scored on the basis of environmental-technical information (which type of waste was dumped?) As a potential environmental impact of pollution (are there many local residents?).
The management and prioritisation of large spatial datasets is supported on the basis of this instrument.
