Green area typology

The “Gemeente- en Stadsmonitor” (a monitor for Flemish municipalities and cities) offers environmental indicators to translate the vision of a liveable and sustainable city into strategic policy. The accessibility of different types of green space is an important parameter that can improve the well-being and health of residents.

Maps and figures are developed that quantify the share (%) of the total area of the city / municipality occupied by different types of green areas (e.g. green at short distance and neighborhood green). Furthermore, the proportion (%) of residents living within a certain distance from each type of green area.

With these figures and maps, both residents and municipal authorities can monitor the green supply and its accessibility and use this information to anticipate on or with local measures.
